Types of Clinical Research Trials

When many people hear the term cancer research, they think only of new drug development. In reality, clinical research spans the full spectrum of care, from prevention and early detection to treatment, supportive care, and survivorship.

Types of Clinical Trials

  • Prevention Trials: Evaluate medications, supplements, or lifestyle approaches that may reduce cancer risk or help prevent recurrence.
  • Screening Trial: Study new methods to detect cancer earlier, often before symptoms appear, with the goal of improving survival.
  • Diagnostic Trials: Assess tests or procedures that may identify cancer more accurately or help guide treatment options.
  • Symptom Management (Supportive Care) Trials: Focus on improving comfort and quality of life by addressing side effects such as pain, fatigue, nausea, cognitive changes, and emotional well-being.
  • Cancer Care Delivery Research: Examines how care is delivered across patients, caregivers, providers, and practice settings to identify improvements that directly benefit patients.
  • Survivorship Trials: Explore the long-term physical, emotional, and social health of individuals after cancer treatment ends.

Understanding Clinical Trial Phases

  • Phase I: Evaluates safety, dosing, and how a treatment affects the body
  • Phase II: Studies how well the treatment works for a specific cancer type
  • Phase III: Compares a new treatment to the current standard of care
  • Phase IV: Collects additional long-term safety and effectiveness data after approval

Patient Safety and Participation

Safety is the top priority through every phase in every clinical trial. All studies follow strict ethical and regulatory standards, and participation is always voluntary. Patients may withdraw at any time and are supported by our dedicated research team through every stage of the process.

Hearing from Patients Who Chose Research

For many patients, deciding whether to participate in a clinical trial comes with questions, concerns, and hope. The stories below share firsthand experiences from individuals who took part in clinical research at Illinois CancerCare, supported by their care teams and guided by their own values. These voices highlight the personal side of research and the importance of feeling informed, supported, and never alone.

Kelly Crawford-Jones

I feel incredibly lucky to have been accepted into a clinical research trial following my breast cancer diagnosis in 2018. I received great treatment under the care of Dr. Le-Lindqwister. Participating in research not only filled me with hope, but it also gave hope to thousands of other survivors as well.

Barbara Pittard

As a new Breast Cancer Survivor, I am most thankful for the ‘Research Heroes’ that came before me. Their willingness to participate in research contributed to the ongoing improvement of treatments over the years. That was my motivation to enter the research program and take part in a clinical trial! The research study correlated well with my physician’s treatment plan and resulted in very few additional requirements. Thank you for the opportunity to help make a difference for future breast cancer patients.

Dr. Edward Colloton

There is no doubt that I benefited from being part of this research study. It was comforting to know that we had experts from not only all over the country, but even from overseas who were very involved in my care.

Financial & Insurance Counselors

Insurance coverage for care related to clinical research can vary. Some insurance plans may not cover certain services associated with participation in a research study, and Medicare has specific guidelines regarding which types of studies are eligible for reimbursement.

Our Financial Counselors are available to help patients understand their coverage and navigate these details. We strongly encourage patients to work with our Financial Counselors to review insurance benefits or communicate with insurance providers about research participation, rather than contacting insurance carriers on their own.

Our goal is to help patients feel informed and supported when considering a clinical trial.
